Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  • What is chemical etching (acid refinement)?

    • Chemical etching is a precise, subtractive process used to sharpen edges, especially on knives, razors, surgical tools, or industrial blades, by selectively dissolving material at the microscopic level to create an ultra-thin, razor-sharp apex.

  • What are the advantages of etching over stone sharpening?

    • Unlike grinding or honing, which mechanically remove material, etching uses chemistry to achieve edge thickness down to <1 micron (often 0.1-0.5 micron), far beyond what stones or wheels can reliably produce without burrs or micro-chipping.

  • What are the disadvantages of etching?

    • Using acids for edge refinement presents safety and functional challenges. Handling these chemicals requires ventilation and protective equipment. Precision control is key and difficult to master. Maintaining consistency in concentration, temperature, and timing of the etching process is also difficult.

  • Why should you trust us with chemical etching?

    • We have formal education in chemistry, and can confidently and precisely handle this process! We are not just knife hobbyists. We have the knowledge and experience to achieve success!
